My first experience of Bowie was not of his music, but of a Ziggy Stardust poster I saw on my cousin’s wall when I was about 7. I didn’t quite understand who he was, but he looked magical to me, and never forgot that look. I can’t remember a time when I didn’t love Bowie, really. I could go on and on about the loss I feel, and it’s comforting to know I am in the company of millions.
A couple years ago, I co-organised a conference called Crafting the Look: Styling as Creative Process. In titling the paper sessions, we decided to name each one after a David Bowie tune, because in thinking about styling and expression of identity, there was no one more inspiring.
Rest in peace, Starman.
